Visiting Singapore during holidays, the places that come to our mind are probably Jewel Changi Airport, Merlion Park, Sentosa Island, Garden by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands, and so on. But trust me, those destinations are what comes to the general tourists' minds. However, when it's the architecture tourists, the destinations they most probably have in their itinerary are Esplanade, The Interlace, Funan Mall, and much more, as architecture tourists tend to enjoy their holidays by capturing the memory of buildings instead of any other famous tourists attraction. So in this article, let's have a virtual tour of Singapore's outstanding architectural building.

Singapore itself has emerged as a global design center. Home to fascinating modern architecture with a strong focus on sustainability. There have been a lot of design precedents of which high-rise buildings or public buildings of Singapore integrated into the landscapes and how the buildings respond to the tropical climate and space constraints. Singapore architecture design has no label under a specific style, as the cultural and ethnic backgrounds are very diverse which results in the varied influences of the design as well. Despite the constant development of new buildings and iconic landmarks, Singapore still has its fair share of representing its iconic traditional buildings.

Without any more further ado, let's dive into the design of each building!

Esplanade Theatres On the Bay / DP Architects and Michael Wilford & Partners

A building with durian alike shaped, with theatres, concert hall, and retail area as the building functions. The facade was made from 7139 triangular aluminum sunshades which respond to the direction of the sunlight into the buildings. Provides a maximum interaction between the inside and nature on the outside.

The interlace / OMA and Buro Ole Scheeren

A distinctive residential complex made of 31 stacked low-rise identical blocks. These stacked volume blocks achieve high density and at the same time maintain privacy and remote viewing, also allowing the created public spaces to be filled with tropical green areas and various other residential public activities.

Learning hub / Heatherwich studio

A new multi-use building and is part of NTU's redevelopment plan for their campus. Instead of corridors linking box structured, they chose to have a unique design with the purpose that this learning hub could be a place where students meet their future business partners or professors from various disciplines. Consists of twelve rounded towers, where the room is open inwards facing the shared circulation space around the atrium and informal garden.

Funan Mall / Woods Bagot

A civic hub for people to play, work and live. It is a mix-used building, providing retail, entertainment, leisure, wellness, food and beverage, co-working, offices, and co-living serviced residence. The concept of this building is The Tree of Life which represents a habitat for creativity, collaboration, and recreation under one roof. Dichroic panelized facade in earthy tones wrapping the building's exterior as a representation of trees roots. In the center of the shopping area, there is a community place for visitors to hang out, collaborate, express themselves and showcase their activity, there also is a bicycle track inside the shopping area, wow! This bicycle track links the building to tourist routes of the city. On the rooftop itself, they also got this facilities for outdoor activities such as an urban farm, rooftop futsal court, and hang-out park, so that visitors can hang out not only indoors but as well outdoor with educational value.

Bishan Public Library / LOOK Architects

A public library with rectangular cantilevered pods for visitors to read and work. This library has become an urban space with a function that exceeds the general library, here in the library it's designed to foster the impression of learning that is fun but remains as a tranquil place to contemplate. Besides that, the buildings adopt the use of skylight, trellises, and colored glass in the library, giving a comfortable reading and learning environment throughout the day.

Robinson Tower / New York's Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF)

A high-rise building divided into two sections with a terraced rooftop garden in between. The upper section is elevated by a slender core, which by that level also functions as the terraced rooftop, providing a maximum view to the nearby Marina. The building is designed to form a contextual relationship with Telok Ayer Market and integrate green space which ultimately cultivates the public realm activity.
